2008 Willowview Personnel Lightning Sprint All State Challenge - Race Report

BLUE Ribbon Raceway at Horsham played host to the 2008 Willowview Personnel Australian Lightning Sprint All State Challenge over the Anzac weekend with Mark Harrington scoring bragging rights for the inaugural event.

The two day meeting saw the coming together of competitors from five different categories, racing together for the first time the Lightning Sprints banner with NSW, Tasmania, Victoria and South Australia all represented.

The NSW cars of Stephen Allen and Steve Zarb struggled for setup early on, with Australian Minisprint driver Peter Robotham and Melbourne Minisprint driver Warwick Taylor both putting in impressive performances to take the opening heats.

South Aussie Nathan Squires and fellow V6 drivers Graham Knuckley and Mark Harrington all had heat wins, with Peter Robotham his first heat win to score another first place heat result.

Mark Sheen was meant to line up in Heat 4A, but blew a motor in hot laps, with Peter Robotham racking up his third heat win to stamp some level of authority on the meeting.

V6 competitor, and eventual winner Mark Harrington took out heat 4B, with Nick Hall taking out heat 5A - but not before Mark Henry clipped the wall - bending his rear axle.

Darryl Knuckley took out the final heat ahead of the two dash events - with Mark Harrington winning the first dash, and Nick Hall taking out the second dash - ahead of NSW driver Stephen Allen.

In the feature event - the 30 lap final - an evenly split field saw a strong lineup of drivers from all five categories ready to take part in what turned out to be an exciting race.

Just one stoppage - when NSW Litre driver Steve Zarb broke his steering and hit the wall doing considerable front end damage on lap 22 - marred the feature event.

V6 driver Mark Harrington took the flag first, ahead of fellow V6 drivers Nick Hall and Nathan Squires on the podium, with Darryl Knuckley fourth, and NSW Litre driver Stephen Allen coming home fifth.

This outstanding race event was supported by Willowview Personnel; Figtree Cafe, Horsham; Wimmera Auto Service Centre, Horsham; Joan's Ceramics & Beads, Mildura; Enzed Hose Doctor, Mildura; Tint-A-Car, Mildura; Paul Sheen Automotive Servies, Mildura.
